چکیده

Theoretical investigations of surface-state electron dynamics in noble metals are reported. The dynamically screened interaction is computed, within many-body theory, by going beyond a free-electron description of the metal surface. Calculations of the inelastic linewidth of Shockley surface-state electrons and holes in these materials are also presented. While the linewidth of excited holes at the surface-state band edge (k‖ = 0) is dominated by a two-dimensional decay channel, within the surface-state band itself, our calculations indicate that major contributions to the electron-electron interaction of surface-state electrons above the Fermi level come from the underlying bulk electrons. Theory and computation of hot carriers generated by surface plasmon polaritons in noble metals

Hot carriers (HC) generated by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in noble metals are promising for application in optoelectronics, plasmonics and renewable energy. However, existing models fail to explain key quantitative details of SPP-to-HC conversion experiments. Here we develop a quantum mechanical framework and apply first-principles calculations to study the energy distribution and scatte...

Ultrafast Hot Carrier Dynamics in Materials from Ab Initio Calculations

!!!!!How does an excited electron lose its energy? This problem is central in fields ranging from condensed matter physics to electrical engineering and energy. We developed and applied calculations to study the dynamics of out-of-equilibrium charge carriers – also known as hot carriers (HCs) – in semiconductors and metals [1–3]. We present ab initio calculations of electron-phonon, electron-el...

Plasmon Modulation Spectroscopy of Noble Metals to Reveal the Distribution of the Fermi Surface Electrons in the Conduction Band

To directly access the dynamics of electron distribution near the Fermi-surface after plasmon excitation, pump-probe spectroscopy was performed by pumping plasmons on noble-metal films and probing the interband transition. Spectral change in the interband transitions is sensitive to the electron distribution near the Fermi-surface, because it involves the d valence-band to the conduction band t...

Dynamical excitonic effects in metals and semiconductors.

The dynamics of an electron-hole pair induced by the time-dependent screened Coulomb interaction is discussed. In contrast to the case where the static electron-hole interaction is considered we demonstrate the occurrence of important dynamical excitonic effects in the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. This is illustrated in the calculated absorption spectra of noble metals (copper and s...

Surface-state enhancement of tunneling thermopower on the Ag(111) surface.

Thermoelectric effects in tunnel junctions are currently being revisited for their prospects in cooling and energy harvesting applications, and as sensitive probes of electron transport. Quantitative interpretation of these effects calls for advances in both theory and experiment, particularly with respect to the electron transmission probability across a tunnel barrier which encodes the energy...
